Kindred Hospice Employees Get Short Shrift

Strange Tony,

The pipe dream that Humana would be a more human employer evaporated for Kindred Hospice employees.  It vaporized when our 40% owners said they would buy the rest of Kindred at Home and spin off the hospice division under CEO David Causby.

The reality is TPG Capital and WCAS, our 60% financial rapscallion owners, trusted Humana to operate KAH over the last three years.  While Humana matched employee retirement contributions up to 6% we received a paltry up to 1%.  Humana took away 33% of our paid holidays and cut holiday pay 50%.

Greed is the reason Humana will sell the hospice division.  It will buy the 60% it doesn't own for an 11x multiple of EBDITA.  Once done Humana will have paid an average of 9.6x EDBITA for all of Kindred at Home.  It can sell Kindred Hospice for up to a 26x multiple.

Humana can earn 167% on their investment for flipping the hospice division, enriching CEO David Causby beyond measure.  Employees know the raw deal imposed by Humana, TPG and WCAS and the abusive treatment from KAH executives.  Keeping us under David Causby is a very bad sign.

Over worked and under paid. A 8 man job but one person pay. The daily demands of the job is crazy. The daily production is to much. The training is a JOKE. They micro manage everything, its so stressful working here. The management puts so much into micro managing the employees. The trainer and supervisor sends emails and consider that as training. All the work is put on the AR reps. They could use the energy to better train the employees. Supervisors don't know their jobs. OMG, the work and the directive is all over the place. They ran off the decent mgr the did have. 95% of the employees don't like working here. Management is the worst, the definitely don't have your back. If you make production , you'll promoted to an lead reguardless if actually know your job or not. I would NOT recommend my dog to work here. Its just that bad. No one really knows their job. One of my worst experiences working here. A weight of stress taking off my shoulders. A very high turnover rate. Management is the worst.

Very poorly run company, from top to bottom. Poor standards of care. Cannot attract or keep good staff. Poor pay for work expected. Too many hours carried over into home life. Unrealistic and unethical productivity expectations, patients/care suffer. Corporate penny pinching. No raise in over 3 years and last raise miniscule despite excellent performance reviews. Unprofessional, unqualified management. Lying and manipulative management. No support or trust, professionally. Toxic work environment. Not localized issues, most offices. Many service failures. Families disgruntled with services and staff take the brunt of frustration and complaints because office nor management ever address issues. Embarrassed to say I've worked here. Would never recommend to anyone in need of Hospice services. Used to be one of the best, most compassionate, ethical companies. Getting worse every year.

Nursing staff is always scrambling to complete their daily assignments, with most of us not getting home until at least 6pm. We constantly had patients added to our workload, when we were ALREADY overwhelmed. Always over productivity, always getting negative feedback in emails, and just overall demoralizing. Management quickly burns staff out by putting too much on your plate. Nursing also ends up taking call pretty frequently, so there really is no work/life balance. If you try to turn down extra assignments, be prepared to get a nasty call or email from the office, and STILL end up having to see the patient anyways. This branch does not have enough staff to oversee and cover 7 counties, and we were still admitting people left and right.

This is no place to work especially if you are looking to excel in your role with the company. Management doesn't know how to train due to the fact that they have never worked in a certain department. A lot of micromanagement which makes it feel as if you are a child, also cuts into maintaining a work life balance. You are given assignments that you have never been trained on just for management to turn around and tell you that this is a good "learning opportunity", with that being said they haven't even looked at the assignment themselves to help and assist you with any questions you have because they don't know how to do anything. The work/home balance is impossible and tons of working off the clock without pay. You can be an exemplary employee, devoted to your patients and it still is not enough. Management is aggressive and unsupportive. The Branch Manager in particular pushed employee moral to an all time low In my 9 years. The actual job I was doing was extremely rewarding. I loved working with my patients and my coworkers were excellent. But we all felt we were intimidated by management, overworked, and under appreciated.I gave appropriate notice upon a hostile management resignation and was given minimal work for my last 2 weeks of employment. When you are paid per patient and not hourly, and not given any work, financially that is a big hit. When questioned about why I was not being given work, I was reminded that I was leaving the company. Meanwhile other nurses who were staying, or being overloaded with the patients. 44. Not just hospice, all aspects of KAH have deteriorated since Humana took over. My wife barely spends time with us because of the bs. They changed how pay was calculated (effectively forcing a pay cut) and increased requirements to maintain the already shity benefits. My wife doesn't even get home until after I've put my son to bed half the time. Almost every facet of lower management in her local branch has walked away. Humana is driving a mass exodus from KAH.

Don't expect to have work/life balance. Always something is an emergency. The support from the management is minimal. Everything is about revenue and profit. Always short - look at the open position list. The staff turnover is very high. If you are in mid-level management expect to spend 4-5 hours a day in conference calls with nothing achieved at the end.

    Pros
    Met some nice people there

    Cons
Stressful job, lack of system and organization in the office, chronic staffing shortages

If they try to sell you on how fun it is to work at Kindred, RUN don’t walk right out the door. Favoritism and high school cliches are a norm here. From the executive director down if you aren’t a mean girl you are definitely not going to be a good fit. Do yourself a favor and and find something else that would be more enjoyable like walking dogs or working in fast food.

    Pros
    It is a job

    Cons
Clichés, painfully immature management, large case loads

Leadership only cares about bonuses from achieving required monthly admissions, incredibly short staffed (25 patients per nurse), bullying, administrator bully’s staff into keeping patients on service when not appropriate and to admit patients who aren’t appropriate, retaliation happens when you give your notice, absolutely no training on your role- sink or swim mentality after 1 day of orientation, very high turnover rate, super high stress, no support from upper leadership members.

f you want to chart your life away, off the clock and not get paid for the time you spend at home documenting, this is the place for you. Overworked, never pleased with what you do, always want you to see more more more despite managing an entire territory solo. Very numbers driven environment. They abuse your generosity. Managers NEVER leave their office for field support. They are NEVER available to speak with. It takes days sometimes to get a return call.

Terrible managerial practices. No pay increase the entire time I’ve been there. You’re just a warm body to them. You have to send a request to a DC committee to DC a patient.

Are you ready to only have one free day during your week? Then this is the job for you. Working 6 days a week with overtimes all over the place. No free time for you or to spend with your family. Well if you consider 4 hours a day sufficient for you and working Saturdays 5 hours, this job is perfect for you. You got the money, but not the time. Now I earn less but at least I have a life. WH has ruined this company, constant changes that make the employees sad and stress. My ex-coworkers tell me that has gotten worse over time.

    Pros
Good salary if you compare to other companies. Good extras (bonuses)

    Cons
Excessive work, constant reminder of extra work, constant reminder of losing your job if you don't comply with extra work, no free time (only when vacations come in)

Management has no respect for their employees and believe they don't have a life aside from working. Very stressing, mentally and physically. Pay is better than other places and offer good benefits, but we have to work from 10-12 daily a week, including Saturdays and the useless overtime is never-ending.

    Pros
    Benefits, Pay

    Cons
    No rest, not pro employee
