Lining Pockets of Kindred at Home Executives

Strange Tony,

Flashback to spring 2018 and one finds a major shareholder upset about the Humana takeover.

A major Kindred Healthcare (NYSE: KND) shareholder forcefully protested the company’s planned sale to Humana and private equity firms, arguing in a publicly released letter that the deal would hurt shareholders but line the pockets of Kindred’s directors and top executives.

It re-lined the pockets of Kindred at Home executives to the tune of $96 million when Humana purchased the rest of the company as announced Tuesday.

As usual employees got a kick in the teeth while donating hours and mileage to the company.

  1. Now that we are part of Humana, however temporary, let's read about this Humana employee's experience:

Used to be a fun place to work, now I dread logging in everyday. Metrics are more important than the employee's well-being. No room for growth or promotion. Pay does not match workload and the benefits are horrible. Imagine calling a Dr office that says we don't take Humana they don't like to pay their claims. No bonuses or incentives.

    Pros
    Pto

    Cons
Short Lunch, Tracking systems, Benefits, Pay, Discrimination

No work life balance in addition to questionable company ethics and emplyoee expectations. You are simply a productivity number, and if you are hired as an experienced clinician be prepared to be driven off later, probably when new management comes in, to be replaced be cheaper less experienced clinicians.

  3. Social Worker-Volunteer Coordinator said "Does not stand behind you unless you are a nurse":

Not a healthy place to work when you feel like you are not trained for your job and constantly told what you are doing wrong. Only the nurses are treated like they are important, everyone else is replaceable.

    Pros
    Patients and families

    Cons
    Everything else

This company is not patient centered, but money centered. They don't seem to care about the employees at all, but how the employees can make more money for them. As a therapist, I was undervalued and overworked. Grateful to be gone.

    Pros
    None

    Cons
Long days, driving 100+ miles a day, limited staff support

  5. Atlanta RN noted how the company steals wages from employees:

    No help/worklife balance

Working for this company is very stressful, There is no support. There is no compensation for additional workload added. Nurses are often having to work with no back up while oncall or over the weekends.

    Pros
    Free lunches/Gift cards

    Cons
    Short staffed

  6. PTA in Washington cited Kindred at Home's wage theft:

Lots of off the clock "paperwork" on the laptop and making phone calls to patients or family members or PCP offices, Typically did 2+ hours documentation on my own time, 7 days per week.

NC RN noted a slightly different form of the same practice:

Expected to drive a ridiculous amount with no reimbursement for your time.

  8. North Carolina Patient Care Manager commented on pay and mileage reimbursement:

Salary and mileage reimbursement below national average. Hard to have work life balance. Every other weekend admin call but not paid but $2/hr no matter the workload unless I have to make visits.

    Pros
    Sense of fulfillment

    Cons
    Salary, work life balance

  9. Home health scheduler got that kick in the teeth:

As a scheduler there were too many expectations for the job. They were unreasonable and unrealistic. I was made to answer the phone and other duties that others in my branch didn’t want to do. There was very little support from management. E mails that were worded with much condescension were routine. I’d work off the clock to get my job done and still got reprimanded for it.

    Pros
    There were zero.

    Cons
The expectation far out weighed what was realistic

Once the company knows someone worked off the clock, an ethical company would pay them for those hours if they are going to reprimand them. To not pay and reprimand is abusive.

  10. Georgia RN pointed out other ways management abuses staff:

Was hired for one position with the promise of another position within a few months. Never happened. Leadership changed frequently so there was little consistency in procedures. Case Managers and Aides were reassigned often which lead to staff and patient dissatisfaction. Communication was ok but often times it was like playing catch up most days. Not worth it when there are other hospices in the area that offer as much compensation with more stability.

    Pros
    Coworkers over all, patients

    Cons
Chronic staffing shortages, fruit basket turn over of staff

  11. Texas RN said "Terrible Upper Management"

There is never enough staff. It’s always hectic. The loyal people that stayed through the buy outs were not recognized. Your opinion did not matter. You were supposed to keep your mouth shut and work. It used to be a great company where you could confidently say that you were proud to work there. Now it’s an embarrassment. My coworkers were great people. The problem is with upper management.

    Pros
    Fellow employees

    Cons
    Many

  12. Kansas Chaplain called it "Indentured Servitude":

Oppressive overbearing management and servile snitch culture. Excellent benefits including car which comes at a price. For those who reside in this rural area and who have never been anywhere the company is extremely attractive in an area with few choices and opportunities.

The best day was my last and I am grateful everyday for having the company in my rear view mirror.

    Pros
    Car

    Cons
    Poor company culture
